Forest staff live away from area, Teak smuggling continues

Afzal Khan from Bhopalpatnam in Chhattisgarh says teak smuggling in the area continues. This week a team led by few forest guards and daily wage laborers caught teak worth Rs 2.5 lakhs from Indravati river while being transported to Andhra. State has appointed more than a dozen full time staff to stop this smuggling but they do not live in the area. Live reporting of the arrest of Shikshakarmis in Chhattisgarh

Teak smugglers also drying the wood in open now in Bastar

Afzal Khan from Bhopalpatnam in Chhattisgarh says smuggling of teak wood is continuing unabated in the area. Now the smugglers have become so powerful that they are also drying the wood in the area. This was exposed when some forest guards caught some teak wood being dried. He says the officials do not live in the area and this kind of activity is going on all over the area. Bank keeping Tendu collection money for loan repayment!

Afzal Khan from Bhopalpatnam in Chhattisgarh is talking to an adivasi who tells him that Govt has sent cheques as bonus for Tendu leaf collection in 2007. But when they go to local State Bank of India the bank officials are telling that the money is deposited as a return for loan taken by them. Teak smuggling continues unabated despite Naxal warning

Afzal Khan from Bhopalpatnam in Chhattisgarh says mafia from Andhra is active in this area from many years who take away teak wood through Indravat river. But he says now the situation has reached such an alarming rate that mafias are active just 3 kms from the Bhopalpatnam city. Naxals have also tried to stop the smuggling from time to time but they are also not effective and it looks forest dept does not want to do anything about it.
