Raju Kumar from Chatra district of Jharkhand says I had heard a report on Swara by Aparna Marandi that many rich people are having Below Poverty Level cards whereas many poor do not have BPL cards. When I checked in my area I found that more then 25% people who have BPL cards are Govt employees and the people who are working as bonded laboreres in those houses have not got BPL cards. A report to officials do not help.Once people do not have BPL cards they can not avail many Govt schemes which are meant for poor. There is a need to start a campaign to rectify this. Raju Kumar from Chatra district in Jharkhand is telling us about some Watershed projects in his block. According to the scheme some ponds were to be dug which farmers can use for irrigation, some embankments to be made to stop the water and also some self help groups were to be formed which will help villagers do some small scale business like poultry etc to make them self sufficient. Each self help group was supposed to be given Rs 50,000. The project has finished in March but the groups are yet to get the money. Raju Kumar from Semaria block of Chatra district tells us that his area is a hilly area and the monsoon rains disappear there within few hours. He says his region today is known for hunger, drought and violence. Majority of people are dependent on farming for their livelihood and they need to migrate in summer for work to other states. He says I am quite confident that if we can stop this running away monsoon water in ponds by making bunds this place will definitely be not known for hunger in future. He says you can see some poles and wires hanging but no work is developing from last 2 years. The local leaders and officers take no interest even after pressurising them. Raju Rana from Nawada village of Semaria block of Chatra district in Jharkhand is telling us that some work under NREGA is going on in his village where half the workers do not have any job card or account in the post office/bank where according to law the money should be deposited. Not only this quite a few children below the age of 18 are working.
