Stone cutters of Dhaulpur, Rajasthan seek help

About 500 families of stone cutters are trying to make a living out of their art of stone cutting. But they are able to make only 50-100 rupees a day. This is barely enough for food, what to speak of education for children. There is no health care available either. They are exploited by contractors. The labour shortens their lives- men rarely live beyond 50 years, and the community is one with many widowed women.
Although many promises have been made to them by the government, and some cards were issued, no help has materialized.
Munawwar Khan looks for help. He can be contacted at 9529207426

Fishing for success- Kudos

This is the success story of Malti Murti and her group, who earned their livelihood by fishing. They faced many problems of seed, nets, racks- as individuals they had to deal with their problems alone.
But now they have formed a group and got linked with the Fisheries department and this has worked very well. Here they have been collecting fish for 4 days, and have a haul of 2.5 quintals on a good day. Now they look for more help in getting a net to catch the small fish, and the formation of pools, so that their seed is not lost.
For more on their story, please call Kamlesh Painkra at 9741596282

Traditional pathways blocked due to development

This message from Sundargarh district in Orissa talks of the problems faced by villagers due to mining. The OCL cement crushing plant company gets its raw material from Lanjigarhna. Litu says that the path to its rise is well known, but what is special today is that due to the company’s mines now the passage between Lanjigarh and Bihawan and Khairawasta Bihawan are cut off. People are not able to reach their farms from their homes. This path is an old one, people have used it freely in the past. When it rained people had to cross the mines from these paths which were determined by their Panchayat. The company is destroying the existing path way. This matter is not going to end here, other villages are also going to be affected. School children will also suffer. Please contact the Tehsildar Saroj Kumar at 9437062929.
