2000+ adivasis languish in Bastar jails without legal help

Mangal Kunjam from Dantewada says there are more than 2000 adivasis lnguishing in various jails in Chhattisgarh who are not able to get bail because they are poor. He gives example of alleged payment to Naxal case where the official of Essar and the contractor has been released in bail but the two adivaisis accussed in the case still remain in jail. Officials are duping tribals from their land in Bastar

Jeebananand from Bastar district of Chhattisgarh says that many tribal land here is illegally being captured by local revenue officials in connivance with influential people. As an example he talks to one adivasi says that his ancestral land has been taken away fraudulently and his appeals from 13 years have not been heard by local officers or collector or Human Rights Commission. Live report from adivasi rally demanding self rule in Bastar

Teak smugglers also drying the wood in open now in Bastar

Afzal Khan from Bhopalpatnam in Chhattisgarh says smuggling of teak wood is continuing unabated in the area. Now the smugglers have become so powerful that they are also drying the wood in the area. This was exposed when some forest guards caught some teak wood being dried. He says the officials do not live in the area and this kind of activity is going on all over the area. Innocents in Bastar jail not getting legal help: Kopa Kunjam

Adivasi social activist Kopa Kunjam has come out on bail earlier this month. He was arrested on 10th Dec 2009 on murder charges. In this message he says he thanks all those who stood by him. He says he will continue his work in Bastar. Too many innocent people are in jail in Bastar because they are not getting legal help. He says he will continue to work to send food and medicine to people of Bastar who need it most and will also keep fighting to bring justice and peace to the region.
