Sanjay Sharma says he had heard a report from Shivram Sonvani sometime back saying that NREGA wages of Rs 2,49,000 of 264 people from Surguja was unpaid and there was no action from the authorities. I did some follow up on it after collecting more details from Shivam but was shocked to discover yesterday on official NREGA website that the complaint on this subject by me is not clear and the concerned people can not be reached. Sanjay Sharma from Chhattisgarh says that the state Govt has decided to spend NREGA money in Mandi, School and Panchayat development as well. He says so far the state has spent maximum money in creation of village roads which is the last item on the list of works in the act. The state is spending very little money in the first item on the priority list that is water conservation which could benefit 80% population of the state most who is dependent on agriculture. Sanjay Sharma from Gram Adhikar Manch says Chhattisgarh Govt has appointed Lokpal (ombudsman) for NREGA but has made no effort to tell people about it. Lokpals have recieved no complaint so far. The rights and duties of Lokpal are also not clear. He says why not Lokpals start looking at old complaints made in various forums and fears that if it continues like this then after sometime Govt may close down Lokpals saying there is nothing wrong in NREGA! Sanjay Sharma says Rural development secretary of Chhattisgarh has passed an order for timely disbursement of MGNREGA wages. The new order says all the workers must be paid after every 6 days. Districts will monitor it every two weeks and will send monthly progress report to capital. After this order some long pending wage distribution at village level has started.
